Butoh workshops

Dance of the Nerve

This workshop begins with observation and perception rather than movement.
Before initiating movement or creating form, we observe the body as it is — its anatomical details as well as
subtle sensations. Through this process, movement emerges not as something we “do,” but as something
that unfolds from within. Rather than expressing personal emotions or stories, we relate to the physical
sensations of emotions. In this way, presence and immediate experience are invoked, rather than narrative.
Within this approach, we place a specific focus on extremely subtle textures — something thin, fading,
small, and fragile. Instead of finding beauty only in what is powerful or magnificent, such as the sun or
mountains, we turn to what is minute — a lone strand of grass, a small flower, or a spider web.
By closely attending to this minute world, we encounter micro-explosions unfolding moment to moment. If
we look closely at a small flower, it is not only delicate and subtle, but also silently and insanely screaming.
A movement that appears externally minimal can hold a high internal intensity.
Not only bones and muscles — we dance through the nerves.

The workshop is open to everyone. No prior experience is required.
